[01] A Day at the Cafe -- Open Mingle
Who: John Miles (Jaune) and/or WHOEVER
When: May 14 [day]
Where: The Blue French Horn Cafe
What: Open Mingle for anyone wanting a place to do an open mingle for in person interactions! Doesn't even have to be with John/Jaune unless you want to -- maybe let me know if you're wanting him specifically. Feel free to set up threads between other characters. Hoping to establish this as a cool hang out |Db
Option 1 - Breakfast/Brunch Crowd
The Blue French Horn was usually a busy breakfast and lunch destination, but Sunday seemed to be even busier than usual. John was in charge of opening today, so if you got there between 6:30 AM and noon, John probably wouldn't have much time to socialize. He had to take orders and bus tables, running plates of their famous beignets or cups of coffee to various patrons. If he saw a familiar face he'd stop by to chat, but otherwise he let the customers have their conversations and hope that staying busy would keep his mind off of the app.
This proved difficult as it insisted on beeping at him occasionally if he didn't check it between rushing from table to table. Normally his mom (the owner and manager of the restaurant) would scold him for having his phone make so much noise, but strangely enough she never said anything. He didn't have time to ask, nor did he really want to draw attention to it. Maybe his mom was preoccupied with her own work. Whatever the case, feel free to take a seat and John will be by to take your order shortly!
---
Option 2 - Lunch/Dinner Crowd
A little later, around 1 PM John is out of his uniform and slumped at a back table. He's exhausted from his morning shift -- but he has some homework to finish up before tomorrow. Not to mention eat some lunch of his own, check his phone, and just relax for a second. The restaurant is still experiencing its lunch rush (or at least the end of it), but now you won't get John as a server. That doesn't mean he won't say hello to a familiar customer or face though. He should start pulling out books, but instead he pulls out his phone. A familiar orange app greets him as usual and he takes a few minutes to check what's been going on.
He won't be on his phone the entire time though, you might also catch him at his homework, though honestly he doesn't want to spend his whole day at the cafe and will probably head out around 2 pm to get some fresh air.

[John enjoys teaching people how to cook anyway and to help a friend, well, that's even better. John thinks about the description and then nods.]
Yeah...now that you mention it I think that one might actually have made it back to our place. I don't think it's in the restaurant at all. I'll check the Lost and Found just to be sure though.
[He goes to get up but then pauses when Haruka holds up a sock of all things. He blinks and then looks around. He's not sure how the patrons of the cafe will feel about THAT particular item.]
Oh jeeze. I hope those just fell out of my bag.
[He takes them, shoving them in his own bag.]
I'll be right back...let me look and see if that book is up front. If not we might have to make a trip to my place.

[Once the festival is over; he's been putting a lot of things off in favor of it, because even Haruka can't be in fifteen places at once no matter how fast his scooter goes or how good he is at juggling (sometimes literally). He hasn't peeked in on the Blue Horn's kitchen in a while.]
Okay. I'll let you know if I find it here. Or anything else.
[There's a faint hint of humor in the last statement as he starts both sorting through the rest of their books and papers and beginning to tidy things up some. A bag is emptied out to divide the vegetables properly, and then moved under the table to make life easier; he doesn't, in fact, find any more socks, but whenever John gets back from the Lost and Found there's... two hairclips hopelessly tangled with a pair of earphones, and a small bag of birdseed, and Haruka looking at them curiously.
He's holding the birdseed, because that's probably his fault, but the hairclips likely belong to John's sister and he has no idea what to do with that.]

I'm pretty sure if I wasn't related to her my mom would fire me. Also...I think we might use the lost and found more than the actual customers.
[He notices the pile and sighs as he adds the items he discovered to it.]
Welp. I can only imagine those are my sister's...but she hadn't mentioned missing any headphones. What about this stuff? There were only three books...

[Haruka's mouth twitches a bit when he looks over their collective pile -- they've probably brought even weirder things into the cafe in the past, but this is a pretty typical Sunday. He's also pretty sure John's mother doesn't mind as long as they don't make too much of a ruckus and clean up after themselves; she's raised two relatively rowdy teenagers, and seems to have a supernatural ability to make messes either disappear or look like they were supposed to be there in the first place.
He sets the birdseed and headphones aside for a moment to look through the books and other items. As expected, none of them are the one he's looking for, though there is an interesting volume titled Cherrygate with a cover depicting a lush forest and several fantastically-dressed woodland creatures.]
This one looks familiar. I think I'm going to get yelled at by the librarians again. [after removing that one from the pile, he looks the other items over one more time just in case, but -- no dice] I think we need to look at your place, if you have time. I can help move the vegetables to the kitchen first.
[Because they probably shouldn't leave those out here in the meantime. John's mother would definitely take exception to having potatoes rolling throughout the establishment.]
no subject
[John hadn't thought about it that way, but it made sense. He chuckled.]
I'm honestly surprised they still let you check out books. What does that make this one anyway?
[He took the other items into his bag, starting to clean up his area.]
I'm off the rest of the day anyway, so we can head over to my place and see if it didn't end up there. I hope it's there...otherwise I'm not sure where else we could look at this point.
[After his supplies were stored again, and he made sure to triple check this time, no sense returning more items to the Lost and Found would mostly defeat the purpose of clearing it out.]
We can stop by the kitchen on the way out and go through the back -- mom won't mind since, as you said, you're more than a customer.
[She typically didn't approve of short cuts through the restaurant's kitchens, but John figured they could get away with it this time]

[Haruka ducks his head a little sheepishly, because he's only a moderate reader but over half of his library books somehow manage to wander into the cafe for weeks at a time; probably because he likes to crack them open over a cup of coffee while he wakes up for the day, or at the end of shifts when he's waiting for traffic to calm down.
Sometimes they also exchange books, but more often than not it's just Haruka being much too absent-minded about anything other than academics or gardening.
He hefts the bags of vegetables carefully along with his share of the items they've gathered, and follows John through the back. Most of the kitchen staff at least know his face; though he hasn't spoken to all of them, he's at least on friendly nodding terms with most. A lot of them like to feed him test dishes, apparently because it's a challenge to get him to really change expression. For now, though, they'll head straight through.]
If it's lost... then it's lost. I might be able to borrow one. [and he'll take better care of it than his library books, he swears -- still] But thanks.
[It's somewhat of a fuss for one book, he knows, but he'll make it up to John later.]
no subject
You must have it in good with the library staff then, I feel like if I had that many missing books I'd be banned from checkout for awhile...
[As they pass through the kitchen, Jaune waves at people and shouts goodbyes. Mostly he's keeping an eye out for any errant books that aren't of the cooking variety. However the kitchen, unlike the front, is definitely more a place of work. They keep it pretty spotless back here and anything that doesn't belong is removed pretty quickly.
So, it's of no use, but Jaune doesn't let that bother him as he steps out into the alley behind the restaurant. It never smells pleasant back here since, of course, this is where the dumpsters are, so Jaune immediately starts making his way towards the more public street.]
No problem. We get some exercise and we can talk a little about the upcoming festival. Mom, Harper, and I finally settled on a final menu for our booth.
no subject
[She does help him out every now and then, but it's mostly to avoid scoldings and get the books he really needs in exchange for flowers and advice, so... He doesn't really think it counts as being in good with the library staff if it's a vaguely positive association with one person, right? Who knows.
They're almost out before Haruka remembers to hand off the vegetables he's brought to one of the other servers. He's sure John's family could use the produce at home, too, but it would just slow them down if he accidentally had to bring the entire lot all the way back to John's place. He also leaves his own share for later; he'll have to come back for his scooter, anyway.]
So you're doing a booth again this year. [he makes a mental note to find out where the booth is at some point, since it's alwayas worth stopping in for the festival specials] How different is it from last year...?
[There may be a hopeful note to his voice, because he did really enjoy last year's menu...]
no subject
I know, man.
[John's family lives close enough to the restaurant to walk--though unlike some shop owners they don't live over it--it wasn't built that way. John didn't mind, it was probably better for everyone if they could be away from work sometimes, otherwise he might not ever get his mom out of the restaurant.]
The menu is a little different--but we'll be offering specials that aren't available at the restaurant during the rest of the year. We tried to do some more flower themed stuff...since those were the most popular items. I just hope we didn't take on too much of a challenge in getting it all made in time.

Library loan periods aside.
He could make the short trek to John's place in his sleep by now, which is a good thing, because he's been a bit out of it all day what with the circus his weekends have become thanks to certain electronic shenanigans. As much as he's looking forward to the festival, he'll be glad when all is said and done, too; things are a bit too hectic lately even for him.]
I remember the specials. [said a little dreamily, so he may have tuned out a little but it's mostly to imagine what might be in store] It's the centennial, so it'll be much busier.
[Otherwise he'd at least think about offering a helping hand during what spare time he has, but the fact of the matter is that there is very little of that indeed.]
no subject
[He sighs] But man is it going to be a lot of work--some custom stuff that we don't usually do and I"m going to be pulling a lot of all-nighters just to help mom get it all done.
[He was sure it would be worth it though, and his mom had said he could take the first half of the festival off just to enjoy the festivities, as long as he worked the later half of the week. Although, hopefully he'll be able to duck out for the parade.]
How are the floats coming?
no subject
[He sure is; the Blues may be almost a home away from home by now, its food as familiar to him as his own dinner table, but that just makes it all the more appealing when they change things up, especially for unusual themes like the flower festival. He's helped a bit in the past with their pre-festival and other pre-event rushes, but John's mother is ambitious enough that it's never quite the same.
He might still wind up pitching in in the lead-up to the festival -- it's almost impossible to set foot in the cafe during a time like this and not get swept up in the burst of activity, like a tiny festival all to itself.]
But I know how you feel... We're doing a cafe for the festival, too. Just drinks, I think. [he isn't as involved in the planning for that one, so he's not entirely sure how it works; all he knows is that he'll likely get dragged into something outrageous and he doesn't really mind] The theater club is doing a lot of the float design, for the parade, so we have a little more time. Or less. I'm not sure.
[There's a tiny shrug that speaks volumes, mostly because he doesn't think he can effectively illustrate the mess of two clubs like theater and gardening working on something like this. They're getting the work done, certainly, but there are very different and equally headstrong personalities on each side.
Haruka's mostly been on the sidelines with the metaphorical popcorn.]

[And then they were at John's place, he produced a key from his pocket and let Haruka in first]
So, I figure we can check the living room and kitchen for your book first...and then see if it managed to migrate upstairs.
